The winger pens a two-year deal at the Crown Oil Arena, following his spell with League One side Wigan Athletic.
“I’m so excited,” Smith commented.
“I’m ready to carry on the momentum the club has had the last couple of years.
“There’s a real feel good factor around the place, and I wanted to be part of it. I can’t wait to get going.”
Head Coach Ian Watson says he is excited about the attributes our new arrival can showcase.
“Jonny is a huge signing for us,” he added.
“He’s going to bring us a lot of quality from the wide areas and he has experienced a lot of league games. He will be good culturally for the group – he’s a winner.
“We’re excited to have him in the building.”
Liverpool-born Smith joined Wrexham at the age of ten, going on to make his First Team debut ten years ago in the FA Trophy.
From there, the 29-year-old was picked up by Championship side Bristol City, going straight out on loan to Cheltenham Town as a teenager. That would be the first of five loan stints whilst with The Robins, including the likes of AFC Fylde and Tranmere Rovers.
In 2021, Jonny linked up with Burton Albion, scoring his first goal in a 1-0 win over Sunderland in the third tier. He made a total of 86 appearances with Albion, before signing for Wigan Athletic after two seasons.
In the 2023/24 campaign, the wide player was a mainstay in Shaun Maloney’s side and won the club’s Goal of the Season Award for his strike against Barnsley. On deadline day last summer he was loaned to Gillingham and netted in their win at Newport County before returning to Wigan in January.
Smith has chosen to wear number 18 for the upcoming season.
Welcome to Dale, Jonny!
