After a previous meeting on the opening day last month, Dale looked to get revenge as a new competition begins.
Dale enjoyed large spells of possession in the contest, particularly in the second-half.
However, Oldham showed their cutting edge as Dylan Koch netted a hat-trick, with Finley Hemissi also on target for The Latics.
Dale did get on the scoresheet with Harry Williams and Reece Leonard on target but these proved to be consolation strikes.
Academy Manager James Caldwell commented:
“The lads are working really hard and their improvement over the summer has been fantastic.
“We were really pleased in the second-half with the energy and quality on the ball, Oldham are a very well-coached side and you can see that in their patterns of play.
“We have some really top talent in the group, with Tom and Reece already involved in the First Team.
“It’s the first of three cup games and we’ll see how much further we can go when Carlisle visit in two weeks.”
The Youth Team take on Grimsby Town next, on Saturday 5th September.
