Dale travelled to face Doncaster Rovers, who they had been beaten by in league action on Saturday.
A much-improved Dale drew 1-1 in 90 minutes, before winning 4-3 on penalties, to see off their opponents.
Sam Ouedraogo put Dale ahead in the 18th minute, finishing calmly side-footed after being found by Fabian Nowacki’s side-rule pass.
However, the hosts equalised five minutes later through an excellent strike from Dylan Hartley.
Goalkeeper Jake Braithwaite made some fine saves to keep Dale in the tie, before making two stops in the penalty shootout.
Charlie Farrell, Nowacki, Jake Martyn and Cameron McCormack all converted their spot kicks, as Dale ran out 4-3 winners in the shootout.
Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Mike Sheron commented:
“I was delighted with the work ethic and determination to come out on top today.
“We scored a very good goal to take the lead and Jake made some excellent saves to keep us level.
“Overall, I’m very proud of the resilience and togetherness that the boys showed.”
The Youth Team are next in action this Saturday, facing Salford City in League action.
