Women Progress With Win Over Blackpool

Rochdale AFC Women secured their passage through to the next round of the Macron League Cup on Sunday.

Erin Whyte’s second goal of the campaign ensured Dale got the better of fellow North West Regional side Blackpool FC Ladies at Kingsway Park.

Blackpool, who had been in decent scoring form heading into the game, started well with Dale withstanding the early pressure on Hattie Simpson’s goal.

A new strike force of Angela Egbon and Ellie Fergus were eager to get off the mark for the season with both having first-half chances which were repelled.

After a cagey opening period, Dale switched their approach to try and break the deadlock with some good opportunities going amiss, frustrating Lee Atkinson’s side.

Just shy of the hour mark, Dale found that elusive opener. Annie Taylor was picked out on the flank and delivered a peach of a cross for Whyte to run onto and slot home from close-range.

The response from the Pools was limited as Dale tried pushing for a second but one would be enough to get back to winning ways.

The gaffer was pleased to see the group’s attitude in what was a tough fixture on paper.

“I’m really happy with the win.

“Blackpool are a very good side with a good manager. Both teams played some excellent football throughout, with some impressive defending.

“We’re happy to go through in the cup competition where we know tough opposition will be waiting.

“Focus switches back to the league next week when we host Wythenshawe.”
