Youth Development Explained

Rochdale AFC has a proud history of developing young footballers.

Following the Club’s promotion to the EFL in 2026 and subsequent reintroduction of our Category 3 Academy under the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), the ambition for that continues and has only strengthened further.

Whilst supporters will be somewhat familiar with the Academy setup, there is also a wider Youth Development strategy that creates a connected pathway from community and grassroots football through to Academy and, ultimately, First Team opportunities.

ROCHDALE AFC ACADEMY

With teams ranging from under-8s all the way through to under-18s, the Academy provides our highest-level development environment.

Teams across all age groups train at least twice a week and play matches against fellow EPPP-accredited clubs.

Within the Academy, there are three main development phases:

Foundation Phase (FP) – under-8 to under-12.
Youth Development Phase (YDP) – under-13 to under-16.
Professional Development Phase (PDP) – under-18s (Youth Team).

Each phase has dedicated coaches, with further staff supporting the whole Academy function.

Together, these phases provide a progression from early engagement and talent identification to an environment that prepares players for the demands of professional football.

ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT GROUPS

Sitting underneath the Academy, our Advanced Development Groups (ADG) provide regular training sessions and matches for under-8s through to under-15s.

Teams across all age groups play in the Junior Premier League. Supporters may recognise this as a similar programme to the one we ran last season, when the Club operated outside of EPPP in the National League.

The ADG allows youngsters to enter and progress through an alternative environment to our Academy, whilst remaining connected to Rochdale AFC.

Further to this, plans are in place to provide another layer of coaching that will sit outside the ADG. Details on these will be provided in due course.

HOPWOOD HALL PARTNERSHIP

We are also pleased to announce a partnership with Hopwood Hall College.

Starting in September 2027, the college’s BTEC Sport with Football qualification will be delivered in partnership with the Club.

Young people with a passion for football will have exciting new opportunities when studying at the college’s Middleton Campus, including weekly training sessions with some of our coaches.

IN SUMMARY

As detailed above, our Youth Development strategy is to provide a broad, connected system, rather than a single Academy programme.

The approach combines player development, community impact and long-term sustainability, ensuring that all youngsters can access a programme suited to their age, ability and stage of development.

By applying alignment in coaching, player support and safeguarding, this strategy allows us to create a clear route from local, grassroots football through to our Academy and First Team.
