Dale Exit FA Cup

Dale’s Emirates FA Cup campaign came to an end at the first hurdle on Saturday afternoon, after a 2-1 defeat at home to York City.

Alex Newby’s stunning strike shortly after half-time was cancelled out by Mani Dieseruvwe, but the York man struck again to send the visitors through to the first round of the competition.

There was one change to the starting eleven from last weekend’s win at Forest Green Rovers. Goalkeeper Jackson Smith, who joined on a short-term loan from Barnsley, replaced Oliver Whatmuff, who joined up with England Under-19s this week.

In a half where both teams were happy keeping possession, there were few clear cut chances at either end.

Devante Rodney had the first effort on goal of the game, diverting Kyron Gordon’s cross wide of the far post.

York front man Ollie Pearce was the visitors’ biggest threat, diverting a Ryan Fallowfield shot over the bar with his head, before seeing two efforts saved by Smith.

The goalkeeper stuck out a foot to deny his one-on-one shot, before again saving with his legs after Greg Olley had laid it off to Pearce.

Ryan East’s powerfully struck effort from outside the area flew narrowly wide of the upright, whilst at the other end, Gordon stuck out a leg to turn Olley’s shot wide.

The deadlock was broken 11 minutes into the second period, when former Dale man Newby struck a superb volley past debutant Smith from just outside the area.

Dale responded well, though, and equalised in the 72nd minute. Tobi Adebayo-Rowling kept the ball alive on the right side of the area, with his deflected shot falling for Dieseruvwe, who turned home his tenth of the campaign.

The striker was then played in by substitute Levi Amantchi but couldn’t take it under his spell when one-on-one with York goalkeeper Harrison Male, whilst Newby fired over at the other end.

Pearce curled a shot just inches wide of the far upright, before Newby’s second of the game, again from the edge of the area, put the visitors back in front.

Dale threw everything at it late on to try and send the tie to a replay, with Sam Beckwith’s poked effort being deflected wide for a corner, the closest McNulty’s men came.
