The winger joins from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee, penning a three-year deal.
It will be Hayes’ third spell at the Crown Oil Arena, having made 25 appearances across two loan stints in the 23/24 season.
On rejoining Dale, Hayes commented:
“I’m buzzing. I love this club, and it’s always had a place in my heart.
“Some of the lads from then are still here, so it’s good to know people straight off the gate.
“I’ve spoken to the gaffer quite a lot, and he seems like a great guy. He’s really excited about the project that we’ve got going on here.
“He showed me the plans he has for how he wants to play, and I’ve got on board with them straight away. I think it will really suit me and I’m really excited to work with him.”
Head Coach Ian Watson added:
“I don’t need to tell the fans how good a signing this is for the Football Club, as they have already seen how amazing Cian is.
“As a coach, I’m really excited to work with him. He’s a player who will bring us so much when attacking the opposition, and his energy will help to drive the group.
“The Club has done an amazing job in bringing Cian back to Rochdale, and I can’t thank them enough. This is my first signing as the Head Coach of Rochdale, and it is the perfect start.”
Born in Preston, Hayes joined Fleetwood Town’s academy and became their youngest ever player at the age of 16.
He signed his first professional contract in January 2021, spending time on loan at FC United of Manchester the following season.
In October 2023, he joined Dale on loan for his first spell, making nine appearances and scoring twice, including a memorable strike away at Dagenham & Redbridge.
Soon after, the former Republic of Ireland Under-19 international was recalled by Fleetwood but returned to the Crown Oil Arena for a second spell in February 2024.
He made 16 appearances throughout the remainder of that season, scoring five times and establishing himself as a firm fan favourite.
Hayes’ form in the blue of Dale earned him a summer move to League One side Peterborough, where he made 78 appearances in all competitions across the last two seasons.
