Dale secured passage through to the second round of the competition with a 2-1 win at Fleetwood Town in extra time.
The Head Coach believes it’s a win that could generate positive momentum.
“I’m really pleased for the group, because everyone at the Football Club is working so hard,” commented Watson.
“We’re night and day trying to make sure we give everything we possibly can. It’s a win for the supporters for sure, and the people at the Club, everybody involved, because we really needed something just to turn a bit of momentum for us.
“I thought we started the game well. It’s been clear that we haven’t started the last two league games well and then the game runs away from us, and our gameplan becomes impossible after 10/15 minutes.
“We spoke about being really robust, having a lot of grit and starting the game with 100% concentration.
“I felt we needed to be really good with the ball today, but you can see the boys are playing with fear, which comes from a good place because they want to do so well.
“They’re quite tense and I don’t think we’re playing with as much courage as is required for what we want.
“We get to extra time and the boys are really tired, so I think they lose that fear and I thought we were the better team. You could see how much bravery we played with and how many moments we had.”
