ERNIE COOKSEY TROPHY

Dale and Oldham Athletic will compete for the Ernie Cooksey trophy on Tuesday.

The trophy was introduced for the pre-season friendly between the sides in July 2019. It was made possible thanks to the Dale Supporters Trust and Oldham Athletic Supporters Foundation who came together to fund the new trophy. Oldham currently hold the trophy following their 4-3 win at Dale in October 2023, which was followed by a 1-1 draw at Boundary Park later that season.

Ernie was treated for skin cancer in 2006 but suffered a reoccurrence two years later, and sadly passed away in the summer of 2008.

He played nearly one hundred games for Dale between 2004 and 2007 after joining from the Latics, where he had made 40 appearances. He proved to be extremely popular with both sets of supporters.

Forever in our thoughts, Ernie.

THE OPPOSITION

Oldham are into their third season in the fifth tier after relegation from the EFL in 2022. They are currently six points and two places ahead of Dale with both teams in the Play-Off positions, Dale with three games in hand on the Latics.

Micky Mellon’s side have just five defeats to their name this campaign, with three of those coming since the turn of the year. Thanks to Mike Fondop’s brace on Saturday at AFC Fylde including a 93rd minute winner, Oldham ended their winless run. In doing so, the striker moved onto 13 league goals this season, one ahead of Kairo Mitchell in the standings.

They have strengthened their side in January despite losing both Josh Stones and Sam Clucas. The additions of experienced EFL men in Tom Pett and Jordan Rossiter alongside the pacy forward in the shape of Billy Waters and Ryan Leake at the back seem to have given Mellon options.

HEAD TO HEAD

Tuesday’s clash will be the 65th meeting with Oldham. Dale have won 18 of those with 22 draws and 24 Oldham victories, spanning across three different leagues and cup competitions. This will be our third National League meeting with a 4-3 defeat here last season and a 1-1 draw at Boundary Park.
