THE OPPOSITION
Overview – There’s been plenty of change in the Wealdstone ranks since our meeting in August, with the recent rise looking like they’ll be mid-table certainties in their sixth consecutive season at this level. The Southern outfit seem to have impressed most at home with two wins over Southend United in two competitions, in a run of seven games unbeaten at home following Dale’s 3-1 triumph. Five games winless across the festive period stagnated faint hopes of a playoff push but a run in the Isuzu FA Trophy, which included a 3-0 win at Forest Green Rovers in round five, covered over the league form. That progression was unable to be turned into points as The Stones lost their next three which saw Sam Cox lose his job. Gary Waddock’s appointment didn’t initially change their fortunes until the second week of March with three straight wins, followed by three defeats. A spot in the Trophy final was claimed with a win over Marine and then a remarkable 7-0 win over Hartlepool United in the league, with 15 wins and 18 defeats showing the inconsistent season.
Manager – Gary Waddock – 64yo, appt Feb 2026. After just eight months in charge, Sam Cox was relieved of his duties after three straight defeats. Waddock took over in his first permanent managerial role in over six years, with assistant duties at Southend United, Cambridge United and Walsall in recent seasons. His first game ended in a win and he has won six more games, including a trip to Wembley secured last month.

A defender who has played for both sides this season and currently in the Wealdstone squad is Charlie Waller. The 21-year-old joined Dale on loan from MK Dons in December, making four appearances in total.
The following month he joined The Stones and made his debut away at Eastleigh in February.
Another familiar face who signed on the same day as Waller is wing-back Michael Adu-Poku. Initially joining on a short-term deal, the 20-year-old has extended his loan after ten outings under Gary Waddock. Michael appeared seven times for Dale towards the end of the 2024/25 season.
