Women Win Premier Cup

7 May 2024

Dale Women lifted the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League Premier Cup on Sunday.

They ran out 3-0 winners over Salford United Juniors to claim their first trophy of their new Open Age era.

A Shannon Gill brace and one from Alicia Barnett sealed the win, against a Salford side that went into the match in good form.

Dale goalkeeper Leah Jackson had to be at her best between the sticks, with a strong defence in front of her.

The scoring was opened when Barnett hit a stunning free-kick into the top corner from 30 yards midway through the first-half.

That lead was doubled before the break, when Barnett turned provider, sending in a low cross for Gill to finish clinically.

Dale showed great composure after the break and added a third 20 minutes into the second half when Gill beat the offside trap and found the bottom corner to wrap up the win.

Dale could have added more to their tally if it hadn’t been for some good goalkeeping, but they didn’t care, as they lifted the Premier Cup.

They are back in action again on Tuesday, in another cup final. They face Manchester Laces in the Challenge Cup final on Wednesday 8th May (7.45pm).
